Education To Become Dentist
To first get into a good undergraduate school, you must get good grades and graduate high school with a high school diploma. While at college or university, you need to have a bachelor"s degree in science. Majoring in a field such as physics, chemistry, and biology always help when applying to a dental school.
Dental school admission officers typically accept undergraduates with a GPA of 3.5, so you should aim higher than this if you want to get into a better school. Since communication with patients is important for dentists, they may require that you take one semester of writing intensive classes, in order to get you prepared. The Dental Admission Test is also required which tests you on several science topics you have learned during your undergraduate education.
During dental school, you will learn for another four years. The first two years are spent in the classroom and you will be taught anatomy, microbiology, biochemistry, and physiology. All of these are necessary in your education as a dental student, as you will use them in your future career. For the last four years of dental school, you will study in dental clinics, under the supervision of licensed dentists.
After completing dental school, you will earn your Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. If you decide to go into a specialty in the dental field, the state you practice in may require that you go through a program that lasts 2 to 5 years for additional advanced training. Education needed to become a dentist may take a long time, but the job is very rewarding and stable.
There are many online programs offered by colleges and universities which allow a bachelor"s degree in science related to the field. They typically cost a few thousand dollars, which is relatively cheap compared to many regular universities which can cost up to twenty thousand dollars. The amount of time it takes to earn a degree is around the same as it would take to get a bachelor"s degree from a regular college or university, 3 to 4 years approximately.
