Become Dentist

In order to become a dentist, you will have to go through many steps. This process will begin in high school, where you must keep a high grade point average over your four years there. Getting B"s and higher in Biology, Chemistry, Health, Physics, and Math during high school is a good start if you are aiming to become a dentist.

You should ask your high school counselor for information on colleges and universities that offer good pre-dental programs involving science. They will have lists and directories available for you to look through. Try hard to get a good grade on the SAT and apply to the universities that you want to go to before the deadline, so you will still have time to change your mind.

Once at college or university, pick a major that will help you when you proceed to dental school. This can range from a health major to a chemistry major. You should continue to be a high achiever in college, especially in your science classes, as dental schools will weigh these grades against you the most. After getting a bachelor"s degree in science, and graduating from the 4-year university, it is time to move on to dental school.

Research four-year dental schools that are fully accredited and that you think provide a good learning atmosphere for you. Make sure that you meet all of the admission requirements, as it is unlikely that you will get in if you do not meet all of the requisites. You will then take the Dental Admission Test, one of the determining factors in which school you will get into. Your test score, science grade point average, teacher recommendations, and overall GPA will be extremely important in the dental school admissions process.


During the first two years of dental school, you will mostly be spending time in lab and classroom courses. You will intern at dental clinics during the last two years, supervised by licensed doctors there. After completing the dental program, you will earn either a D.D.S or a D.M.D, depending on which dental field you decide to go into.

After graduating from dental school, you need to obtain your dental license. You will be given written and practical state examinations, which you must pass. Finding a job is fairly easy, look around for open positions at dental clinics. Weigh the different benefits of each, including starting salary and then make your decision on where you want to be employed.
